trick of the trade

Slipcovers are one of my favorite tricks of the trade because:

1. they aren't permanent
2. you can take them off and wash them
3. they aren't quite as expensive as re-upholstery

I had this slipcover made for one of my client's kids rooms and it turned out pretty cute. I used an indoor/outdoor fabric which makes it more durable and stain-resistant.

before:

The safest bet would be to have them made...but if you're brave you could even try to do it yourself!

  3. where did you get that fabric? I think I want to do a fabric that is yellow with some type of white design on it. I love the yellow floral chair at anthro., do you know of where to find some cute , bold retro/modern looking fabrics?

  4. the slipcover was about $250 for the labor. the fabric is a designer fabric...I don't buy retail fabric but I know that there are lots of great websites and often times you can find designer fabric remnant stores where they sell the scraps...or you could get fabric through a designer in your area.

  5. Catlin, I am related to Shaun and Jamie Muaina. I hope its ok if I make a comment! I just think you do such a great job, and I really admire your work! Anyway, as an aspiring designer myself I would love to know where to look for such a person who would know how to make the covers. I would be really grateful! Thanks!

  10. Hi Caitlin,

I enjoy your blog and I'm a regular reader.

I live in Dubai, and wanted to find out if you can recommend someplace where I can get my sofa upholstered?

You suggested outdoor fabric which is more durable, wehre can I find these here? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    THank you,

    Sunita
