In the last few days that we've been vacationing in the Outer Banks, North Carolina, my thoughts have turned to cozy cottages. The shake shingle houses and picket fences along the beach are so charming- I can't seem to get enough. As I was thumbing through July/August Cottage Living that was left at the house we're staying in, I spotted some really great spaces from Sarah Richardson's summer house (of HGTV). Thought I'd share...
The thick stripe painted floors are darling and I love that Schumacher print on the headboard- I've had it in my swatch box for awhile- hoping to still use it.
I think it's so cute how the quilts are neatly folded over a drapery rod.
Each room has a different take on the tongue and groove paneling- either painted or a combination or a change in plank direction...brilliant.
Another great Schumacher print- love how it's railroaded (running horizontally across the headboard).
Vintage touches & accessories.
The backsplash is gorgeous.
The blue & white scheme in the living room is timeless- even with a little Chaing Mai Dragon.
A splash of leopard does the trick...another Schumacher, I believe.
And my favorite part of all, the clever seating in the living room. The individual ottomans for the chairs are such a smart idea. I rarely do multiple ottomans because they can look slobby to me, but this style ottoman is so clean and refined and it could even be used as a table. Definitely going to put this in my file.
Perfect corner for a chaise.
And I'm always a big fan of 4 chairs + a circular table for cozy conversation.
Beautiful.
My husband and I just bought a cottage-style home over the weekend. We are moving for my job- unfortunately there's not lake or beach nearby, but it's still a really fun home!!
ReplyDeleteThe duvet in the second picture down (white with bright botanicals) is from Pottery Barn and totally on sale right now!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog Caitlin!
We're just looking at summer cottages to rent with my parents and I was thinking how much potential they had, and how I'd love to decorate a house like this sometime... This one is gorgeous!
ReplyDeletelove it. definitely wishing i had a summer cottage right about now. although this one is quite generous on the bedrooms, pity they didn't show the bathrooms.
ReplyDeleteLOVE. I could settle on the East Coast in a second. I love the charm and the tradition. I want to send you pics of this family i babysat for that lived in Old Saybrook, CT in a burrow called Fenwick. You would really appreciate! (you just dont find anything close on the west coast)
ReplyDeleteI adore Sarah's work! That cottage is so lovely and laidback, yet still so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge Sarah fan and her cottage is close to where our Muskoka place was. I miss it. But now I've moved to Dubai! Thanks for the source tips in your archives - it's been helpful trying to locate things for our apartment :)

ReplyDeleteGlad you guys are having a good time Cait! So my mom and I actually watched the shows of Sarah putting this projectl together, I would LOVE to have that kind of a space someday. It's fabulous.
ReplyDeleteShe is a complete genius...I always love her stuff! And that first bedroom is just perfect to me, the perfect balance of comfy and refined...and that headboard is *awesome*!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to see a more cottage-ie style on your blog. Somehow I think your take on cottage would make a pretty convincing case for the style. I'm wondering, what's your take on standard cabinetry? If you had to do a level 2 standard cabinet (a shade/stain of maple)or white...what would you pick? Also would you add crown molding to the standard cabinet or does that just make them look cheaper? I want you to do a track home makeoever/mood board! haha. Because let's face it, while we'd all love to put loads of money into a charming older home and renovate to make it our own, sometimes a clean/new track home is what we live in. How do you take the standard box and make it...charming?
ReplyDeleteI love the cottage/nautical look! One day when I have my 'real' house post Singapore I want a shake-shingle house. So, start collecting ideas for me:)
ReplyDeleteWow!! What a beautiful place. Love it. :) thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHope you're having fun down here in the Carolinas. Wish you were just a tiny bit closer!
ReplyDeleteI love the details in that kitchen - the boards on the side of the cabinetry, the lantern not simply hanging but from that post and the tile - beautiful!

I love Sarah's work - it's always so beautiful. These are quite possibly some of my favorites! There's just something about that "cottage feel." Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI just posted about that same thing a couple of weeks ago. I LOVE that cottage, and did you notice that it was on it's very own island? To die for!! Can't wait to see your new place!
